Patrick Wolf - Together

Patrick Wolf - Together

You can’t blame him for this slightly cheesy, happy tune ‘cos he is happy. It’s unnatural to ask a person to write sad songs when he/she is happy and vice versa. And after all I’m quite delighted after a few listens.

Special - Quiet Moments

There’s this voice saying - calm down calm down… Here’s a collection of 7 calm down songs.

Maria Mena - This Too Shall Pass, Homeless

Gorgeous ballads. “This Too Shall Pass” is bright and little uplifting while “Homless” is down right heartfelt, good song before dream, amazing vocals too.

genre: pop, folk, contemporary
rating: 4/5 stars (both)

James Vincent McMorrow - We Don’t EatHigher Love

Haunting and beautiful. Something just swirl into your heart - chilly but pretty. Coincidentally, just like Maria, ”We Don’t Eat” is on the brighter side, with higher spirit while the cover song “Higher Love” (Steve Winwood) is cold yet emotional and touching, and only left you craving for more.

genre: folk, acoustic
rating: 4/5 stars (both)

Lana Del Rey - Video Games

This is massive. Would you expect something this beautiful from a song titled “Video Games”? lol… Amazing vocal, beautiful melody suitably matched with a bare/minimum/subtle arrangement. Watch out for this girl, she’s gonna be big. Song of the year contender.

genre: indie pop
rating: 4.5/5 stars

Charlene Soraia - Wherever You Will Go

Um… slightly cheesy, but I have a soft spot for this, nice cover (The Calling). Lovely voice with slight vulnerability, not bad at all.

genre: pop
rating: 3.5/5 stars

Rebecca Ferguson - Nothing’s Real But Love

Soulful pop, simple and heart warming, heartfelt. The focus is on the vocal and nothing else is important.

genre: soul, pop, blues
rating: 3.5/5 stars

Housse de Racket - Roman

Housse de Racket - Roman

Simple, fresh, youthful, effective and attractive. It’s so instant considered I had only heard a small snippet of this, after that I just had to check them out, this is so attractive. *o* All the way, all the way…

Special - Rap Special

Rap isn’t my thing, but even so, I find these 2 interesting and addictive:

Nas - Nasty

Compare to chart topping mega heavy beat with super catchy, sugary hook lines hip-hops, I find myself preferring this old school, simple, straight forwards style. It has its special charm if they know how to put it. I have to say the beat is very addictive. And I like the video too.

genre: rap, east coast hip hop

The Ting Tings - Hang It Up

They are back! I always like a bit of their fun pop/indie pop style. I think this isn’t strictly rap but I like this chant-rapping style. This is really like their hit “Shut Up and Let Me Go” though, but also offerring something new. Fun poppy + colorful +chant rapping = highly fun and attractive for us. :D

Alex Winston - Locomotive, Velvet Elvis

Alex Winston - Locomotive, Velvet Elvis

After the delightful and highly catchy “Sister Wife”, I’m in love with 2 more Alex Winston singles. Her voice and music are very unique, a mix of bits of eerie, weird, vintage and sweet? Deep impression after first listen! “Locomotive” is actually a single prior to “Sister Wife”, light and very catchy too. “Velvet Elvis” is even more upbeat and teasing, but just what is “objectum sexuality”? Um, very interesting… All in all these are surely some of the best indie pop ever heard in recent years.

Lights - Siberia

Lights - Siberia

Girl minimal synthpop stuff, great fun stuff. The effects feel a little bit teasing too. Interesting, innocent in her very own way, good work.

Foster The People - Call It What You Want

Foster The People - Call It What You Want

This is feel good music at its best. My second official 2011 summer tunes (first one here). Just dance around people, it’s pure pleasure, it all comes naturally, it flows super good, it’s organic, it’s earth-friendly…(!!) lol.

Lykke Li - I Follow Rivers

Lykke Li - I Follow Rivers

I’ve been enjoying “Get Some” quite a lot, and this follow up single get the same love from me if not more. I thought they were just some average indie songs, but I ended up loving them more than expected. I guess it’s because they are well crafted, nicely done and are real growers.

Special: Wonderful Covers - James Blake, Ingrid Michaelson

James Blake - Limit to Your Love (Feist)

The original is great, and what James basically does is to deepen it more. While I don’t necessary like music that are “deep”, I love this cover. What stands out for me the most is his use of his voice, which is wonderful, plus it’s naturally full of character, I can really feel his emotion here. INDEED AMAZING. ^^

genre: minimal, dubstep
rating: 4/5 stars

Ingrid Michaelson - Parachute (Cheryl Cole)

Strictly speaking, this isn’t too much a cover, the song was originally co-written by Ingird for Cheryl and now she sings it back. The original version is slightly dark and elegant and this new one is cute and lively. It’s very clever to provide something quite the opposite, and thus gives it a fresh and new feel. I love them both, and am highly recommending them both… (yes, still recommending Cheryl’ one, I’m still loving that jam.) ; )

Sia - Bring Night

Sia - Bring Night

As much as I miss her sentimental numbers, I’m embracing this new cheeriful, funky Sia. While I have to say I did get tired of it eventually, I enjoyed it while it’s fresh and it didn’t leave a bad taste after it “retired” or phased out, lol. I really have to give her applaud for trying out something new. I mean I did like this new direction, however, maybe a little more depth and/or weirdness would be even better, to avoid the risk of sounding a bit like a children’s song! LOL… but then she’s already weird, in a good way, then it woud be… lol, why not, it could be good, for the sake of “art”, now, that’s a grand backing…
